Data Assimilation

The BOOS Data Assimilation Working Group (DAWG) is formed by 6 marine data assimilation groups from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany and Sweden. Currently, DA schemes are applied for production of operational forecast and reanalysis at BSH, DMI, TalTech and SMHI, for national and/or CMEMS BAL MFC service. Most of the partners use Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (PDAF) including a variety of ensemble filters. Others use variational and/or Ensemble-Variational methods. The PDAF is developed by AWI, which is also part of BOOS DA cooperation. The assimilated parameters include SST, T/S profiles, sea level, sea ice, satellite chl-a and nutrient-oxygen profiles. The working group uses a virtual coding environment and has weekly group meetings. Current status of BOOS DA WG is shown in Tab. 1.
